In the walls of every cubicle, corridor, and room in the Ministry of Truth, there is a large oblong slit protected by a wire grating. This is the memory hole. When any document is due for destruction, or even a scrap of waste paper is seen lying about, it is an automatic action to lift the flap and drop it in. The paper is then whirled away on a current of warm air to enormous furnaces hidden somewhere in the building's recesses. Similar slits exist in thousands or tens of thousands throughout the Ministry, not only in every room but at short intervals in every corridor.

Operation and Daily Function

Once a document is dropped into the memory hole, it is irretrievably destroyed. This process is central to the daily work of the Records Department, where Winston Smith and his colleagues alter or replace newspapers, books, pamphlets, films, and photographs to match the Party's current needs. The original copy is destroyed, and a corrected version is placed on file. This continuous alteration applies to every kind of literature or documentation that might hold political or ideological significance. Day by day and almost minute by minute, the past is brought up to date, and in no case can the falsification ever be proved, because the evidence has been consumed by the furnaces.

Instrument of Past Control

The memory hole is the tangible mechanism of the Party's slogan: "Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past." Winston Smith understands that if all records tell the same lie, the lie passes into history and becomes truth. When he discovers the photograph proving that Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford were innocent, he drops it into the memory hole within minutes, knowing that the evidence will be obliterated forever. The memory hole thus ensures that the Party's version of reality is the only version that remains.

Symbolic Significance

The memory hole stands in stark contrast to objects that preserve the past, such as the glass paperweight that Winston treasures as "a little chunk of history that they've forgotten to alter." While the paperweight is a fragile remnant of a forgotten age, the memory hole actively devours all such remnants, reducing history to ash. Together with Newspeak, which narrows the range of thought, the memory hole eliminates the physical traces of the past, leaving only the Party's ever-changing narrative.
